"A Match Made in Destiny"
Sharman and Monika had always been the definition of opposites. Throughout their school years, they were never seen apart from one another, not because they were friends, but because they were rivals. From the first day of their school to the last, their rivalry grew stronger. Monika, with her sharp wit and infectious charm, and Sharman, with his sarcasm and laid-back attitude, clashed at every turn. The most trivial of things could spark a heated argument between them, from who would get the last seat in the classroom to whose ideas were better during group projects.
But fate had something else in store for them.
In their 12th grade, something unexpected happened that would change the course of their lives. Both Sharman’s grandpa and Monika’s grandma had a love story of their own, one that had never come to fruition. They were in love in school, but circumstances pulled them apart, leaving their hearts broken. Now, after many years, they found each other again. They decided that their grandchildren—Sharman and Monika—would fulfill their unfinished dream. They wanted Sharman and Monika to marry and build a life together, rekindling their lost love through their grandchildren.
The idea seemed absurd to Sharman and Monika. How could their grandparents dictate their lives? After all, they had been at odds for as long as they could remember. But despite their protests, both families were insistent. The couple’s marriage was arranged, and they had little choice but to accept.
When the wedding day arrived, it was a grand affair. Monika, in her traditional wedding attire, was nothing short of stunning. Sharman, looking dashing in his suit, couldn’t help but feel a sense of unease. They barely knew each other beyond the petty squabbles of school, and now, they were expected to live together as husband and wife.
Their new life began in an apartment that both of them reluctantly moved into. It was a modern two-bedroom space, decorated with an overwhelming amount of wedding gifts. From the very first day, it was clear that neither Sharman nor Monika was happy with the arrangement. They fought over everything—who would do the chores, who would take the bigger bedroom, even what kind of curtains to hang. The tension between them was palpable, but underneath that, something else was slowly brewing.
The days passed, and the fights became less frequent, but the feelings that they had suppressed for so long began to surface. Sharman would catch himself watching Monika from the corner of his eye when she wasn’t looking, and Monika would notice Sharman’s smile in the middle of a silly argument. It wasn’t love yet, but it was something close—a sense of comfort in each other's presence. But the real turning point came when jealousy reared its head.
One afternoon, Sharman was sitting in his college class, his mind wandering when he saw a girl sitting next to him, laughing and talking with him. He had no reason to be upset, but the nagging feeling in his chest wouldn’t go away. Why did it bother him so much that another girl was talking to him like that? He realized he wasn’t just uncomfortable; he was jealous. The same thing happened when he saw Monika helping a boy in her class one day. He couldn’t help but feel a pang of jealousy when he saw them laugh together.
That night, after dinner, he tried to mask his frustration, but Monika noticed. She’d always had a keen sense of when something was bothering him. “What’s wrong with you today?” she asked, her voice gentle.
Sharman hesitated. “Nothing. Just a little tired,” he replied, but Monika wasn’t buying it. “I saw you today, with that girl. You seemed too... comfortable.”
Sharman stiffened. “What about you?” he shot back. “You looked pretty cozy with that guy in your class too. Do I need to be worried?”
Monika’s face flushed slightly, but she met his gaze head-on. “Maybe you should be,” she teased. But deep down, a part of her knew what was happening. She had begun to feel something for Sharman too, even though they’d fought relentlessly in the past.
The next few weeks saw a shift in their interactions. They began to talk more, not just about trivial things, but about their lives, their dreams, and their pasts. Monika discovered that Sharman had a passion for photography, something he had kept hidden all these years, while Sharman learned that Monika loved to cook, a skill she hadn’t shared with anyone. Slowly, they found common ground in their quirks and interests, and it was during one of these conversations that Sharman decided to do something special.
One evening, after Monika had spent the afternoon cooking a delicious dinner, Sharman came home with a small box. Monika was setting the table when he placed it in front of her. “I don’t know much about relationships, but I know one thing,” Sharman said, his voice quiet but sincere. “I’ve never met anyone like you before. And despite all the fights, I think I’m starting to care about you more than I thought I would.”
Monika opened the box, and inside was a delicate ring, sparkling under the soft glow of the apartment lights. “It’s just a ring,” Sharman added quickly, “but it’s a symbol of how much you mean to me. No more fighting. Let’s start this marriage on a better note.”
Monika’s eyes softened. She had never expected this from Sharman, but in that moment, she realized that he had grown into someone she could see herself with. She smiled, a tear slipping down her cheek. “Thank you, Sharman. I... I’ve also started caring for you, in my own way,” she said, her voice barely above a whisper.
That night, they shared a quiet dinner, and for the first time since their wedding, they truly enjoyed each other’s company. They didn’t talk much, but the silence was comfortable. It was a silence that spoke volumes, a silence that said everything they needed to hear.
As the days turned into months, Sharman and Monika’s relationship blossomed. They no longer fought over small things; instead, they worked together to make their apartment feel like home. Sharman would surprise Monika with flowers, and Monika would cook his favorite meals, laughing together as they ate. They celebrated small victories, like getting through an entire week without a fight, or learning something new about each other.
Gradually, their love for one another grew, deepening with each passing day. They traveled together, explored new places, and built memories that would last a lifetime. What had started as an arranged marriage, born out of the wish of two old lovers, had blossomed into a beautiful love story.
In the end, Sharman and Monika realized that sometimes, life’s most unexpected events could lead to the most beautiful relationships. Their love story wasn’t perfect—it had its share of challenges and misunderstandings—but it was their story, and they wouldn’t have it any other way.
They had started as enemies, but somewhere along the way, they had become soulmates. And with that, they knew their love was destined to last a lifetime.
