In the midst of a terrible war, ace pilot Captain Reo was engaged in a dogfight over burning cities. Against him was a very mysterious enemy pilot known simply as the “Crimson Phantom.”
This duel was relentless, with both pilots pushing their limits. At one critical moment, however, Reo caught a glimpse of the Phantom’s face through the cockpit glass-a very young woman, probably no more than his sister.
Reo could not fire upon a fellow human being and would not have been able to shoot the girl down; she had gotten away, and the pilot was left questioning the morality of warfare. Were they monsters, he asked himself, or were they more like him than he wanted to believe: fighting to protect home territory?
His encounter with her resolved Reo to carry the torch for peace. Even in the heat of war, though his story continued to take root in the minds of soldiers on both sides, it proved that humanity could pierce through even war.
