An old farmer had four sons who always fought with A each other.
The farmer thought, “How can I teach them not to fight and learn to live together?”
One day, the farmer had an idea. He lay on his bed and called his sons, “My sons, I am unwell. I think my time to leave this world has come. Please fetch me some thin sticks tied together to make a big, thick bunch.” The sons collected twigs of trees, tied them together and reached home.
“Break a twig each,” the farmer ordered his sons. Each of them broke the twigs easily. The farmer smiled and said, “Now try and break the bunch.”
None of the sons could do so.
“Learn a valuable lesson,” the farmer said, “If you remain united like the bunch, no one will be able to harm you. But if you are divided like the loose sticks, all of you will be broken. United you shall rule, but divided you shall fall.”
