Last week, I celebrated my birthday with a visit to Vaishno Devi. One unexpected memory is watching two uncles, Uncle A and Uncle B, casually estimate the sales of Sagar Ratna (consultants would call it a guesstimate).
Uncle A: Paaji, whenever we go there, the restaurant is almost always full.
Uncle B: Haanji, bilkul. It is open 24 hours, except maybe 2 hours for cleaning. There are at least 10 tables, with 6 people at each. But let is assume 70% occupancy.
Uncle A: Ji, each person easily spends around ₹100, and no one stays for more than 30 minutes since they have to go for darshan.
Uncle B: So, if we take 44 half-hour slots in a day (22 hours) * 10 tables * 6 seats * 0.7 (occupancy rate) * ₹100 = 1.85 lakh per day in sales. Multiply that by 30 days and 12 months.
Uncle A: Paaji, that’s about ~₹7 crore annually. And that’s just the minimum – it could be even more during peak seasons!
Uncle B (laughing): Haanji, maybe we should open our own restaurant here.
Uncle A (smirking): Ji, of course! Because we totally have that kind of money lying around!
They both burst into laughter, and I couldn’t help but smile. It amazed me how casual conversations that used to happen on park benches have turned into fun guesstimates. So, need a practice buddy? Find an uncle!
