Yesterday was a profoundly auspicious day – Devotthani Ekadashi!
For the first time in my life, I observed this sacred fast, and remarkably, it was a nirjala vrat (waterless fast). I’m humbled to share that, thanks to Lord Vishnu’s blessings, I didn’t feel hungry at all!
As I delved into the significance of this day, I was amazed by the ancient wisdom of our Hindu scriptures. Devotthani Ekadashi marks the day when Lord Vishnu awakens from his 4-month slumber (yog nindra, where even while sleeping he is aware of everything) in Kshir Sagar (the ocean of milk).
This day initiates the auspicious period for sacred ceremonies like weddings, mundan, yagyopavitt, etc.
But what’s fascinating is the scientific relevance of observing Ekadashi, which falls every 15 days. Research confirms that intermittent fasting, like Ekadashi, detoxifies the body, promotes healthy living, and boosts immunity (Source: National Institute on Aging).
As mentioned in the Padma Purana,
उत्तिष्ठ तिष्ठ गोविन्द उत्तिष्ठ गरुड्ध्वज उत्तिष्ठ कमलकान्त त्रैलोक्यमंगलम्कुरु
I learned patience, self-discipline, and mental clarity – who knew I had it in me?
I’m more grateful now for the little things, like water and food.
I also gained resilience, empathy for those struggling, and a deeper spiritual connection.
But the biggest takeaway?
True strength comes from within! This journey left me with more self-awareness, resilience, and appreciation for life’s simple joys.
