Modern physics reveals a dynamic universe filled with swirling galaxies, expanding space-time, quantum fluctuations. It is not so much a watchmaker’s precise mechanical clock, but rather an eternal, creative dance – pulsing waves and vibrating strings weaving the cosmic tapestry.
The ancient wisdom traditions of the East intuit this deeper unity too. Zen teaches us to quiet the chatter of the ego-mind, so we can become a hollow bamboo flute on which the song of existence plays. Taoism speaks of aligning with the ebb and flow of polar energies that structure reality.
In zazen meditation, as I follow my breath, with no effort the fluttering thoughts slowly settle and seem to synchronize with the rhythms of nature and the pounding of my heart. A stillness arises, not inert but vibrating aliveness – the Taoist wu-wei state of effortless action. Here the division between self and not-self blurs. The dancing emptiness, bursting with potential, surprises and delights like a child. I become the fingers typing these words, the space between the letters, and the screen on which they form molecular patterns to spark neural impulses in your brain.
We flow through eddies of space-time like shimmering whirlpools within a vast ocean. Though each wave crest glitters for but a moment before dissolving back into the whole, through self-reflection it comes to know the joy, sorrow and mystery of existence – if only briefly tasting the eternal.
So as I meditate on the self’s immersion in fleeting forms and the Birthless that remains, I glimpse that which never comes or goes. The luminous screen of awareness itself, dancing in the empty yet full interplay of Yin and Yang – the eternal wow of the spacetime Tao expressing all these myriad worlds. I marvel that here now I sit typing these pixels on the edge of this boundless mystery.
