Did you once your muscles learn something they can never forget it?
I haven’t worked out in the last week. I was on a vacation. Giving myself time to relax. Eating without worrying about calorie intake and sweating it all out. I have done zero exercise in that time period. While I did not see any major changes in the big muscle groups. My gut started to come out. I spot double chin on pictures etc.

And after coming back, when I tried to lift the weight that I was using before going on a vacation, I felt its heaviness. I could still lift it, but I was more or less struggling. This situation really got me worried because I have been working out for the last year nonstop to lose fat and get into shape. And because of this vacation, if I had lost my muscle density or strength, it would be really disappointing.
But after a few sets, it got easier, and after a few workout sessions, my body went back to the previous shape I was in before the vacation. I wasn’t getting tired frequently and had more stamina during repetitions. This was because of muscle memory.
I heard about muscle memory before but this is the first time I experienced it.
It is proven that due to nonactivation sometimes our muscle lose their density and we get weak over time. But after a few workout sessions or simply just activating those muscles again through exercise, all of the previous mass and strength returns. Because our muscle has already stored all the data from before. And doing the same thing again reactivates those muscle groups.
It is fascinating to imagine that our muscles have a mind of their own.
This muscle memory is also responsible for swimming and cycling. Like once we learned them we never forget. Even martial arts are part of muscle memory. That is why if we keep practicing for years those movements come to us subconsciously.
Muscle memory can also be found in our everyday activities. Like making our bed after waking up or reaching out for the towel after washing our face in the basin. Be it turning off the light, or sliding a belt in our pants. We do all these things without any conscious effort.
But was it always like this?
Nope.
After doing them countless times every day they became part of our muscle memory.
Which in general terms can also be described as a habit.
It happens to me a lot. For example, trying to get something with my hands without looking because I know it’s there, but when I don’t find it I look and realize it has been moved recently.
Thank you for staying until the end!
