I frequently ask myself this question, what makes me happy?
Because the things that used to bring a big smile to my face ten years ago don’t even bring a little change in my overall expression now.
I used to believe that is part of growing up. That we stop loving small things because when we age we are faced with the realities of the world. Many responsibilities wipe that smile from our faces. We don’t get happy about small things anymore.
Like seeing my cousins on vacation, getting chocolate from my father after he comes home from the office at the end of the day, watching a movie with family, traveling with family on weekends etc.
Now I want a home or apartment to live in, a car or motorcycle for transportation, and a monthly income stream to handle monthly expenses are some of the basic needs.
But will all these bring a big smile to my face like that childhood smile?
No.
Why?
Because when we were a child, it wasn’t the things or people that used to us make happy.
The freedom that we had did.
Just take a stroll down memory lane, 10, or 20 years ago what was your biggest worry?
Getting the homework done. Watching T.V. without parents finding out. Staying up late at night. Coming home early from playing with friends. Not being late for school.
And even if we failed, we used to enjoy these things.
Every big decision in our lives was handled by our parents. When they used to say no, we used to get angry and upset. But now after growing up, we realize the troubles they had to go through to fulfill our wishes.
Why were we happy back in our childhood days?
Because we were free. Free to do anything we want without worrying about the consequences.
After growing up the world taught us the meaning of consequences. And the price that we have to pay if we don’t. It put shackles in our minds. Our wild dreaming nature was forced to reduce into realistic thinking.
As a child, we imagined we could be anything we wanted. But now we have to think of it realistically.
We may not have wings to fly in the sky like birds but we have our minds.
Which is more powerful than we can ever imagine.
Do you know our thoughts travel faster than the speed of light?
Now imagine chaining down that imagination power. Of course, it will make us sad.
But what if you can have that freedom now? Freedom of choice, freedom of thinking, freedom of moving, freedom of living.
I think this will bring that big smile on my face.
And what about you?
Thank you for staying until the end!
