Lighting in Video :

Lighting in video is one of the very important factors of good quality footage and grading. If you skip this element, your footage will come out to be trash. So if you want to make your clips Oscar looking, you cannot ignore quality lighting. Now I will discuss about different types of light shaping by dividing it into 4 segments :

1. Types :

Rembrandt Lighting :  This type is lighting is the best depth lighting you can create and it is also the most common and most cinematic lighting that you can achieve. It can be done by placing your light at xyz axis of 45 Degrees. This make a triangle on the dark side of the face illuminating the eyes and cheeks. It creates a nice separation between background, subject and the foreground. Split Lighting :  Again this is the lighting which is used specially for males as it gives a muscular look to the talent. It is created by as the name suggests, keeping one side illuminated and one shadow. Paramount/Butterfly Lighting :  This type of lighting is also very good specially for females as it creates depth on the cheeks of females which is best suited for them. It makes your model more beautiful with keeping the shot cinematic. It is created by keeping the light 70 degrees above head and make a little nose shadow looking like a butterfly. Flat Lighting :  This type of light is well known for its trashiness. This light is very infamous as it does not create any depth to the talent. This is used in BOLLYWOOD super high end with the highest paid actors when directors are not directors, they are celebrities. This gives a general video look to a movie. This is not recommended to be used and I wont be telling you how to create it, lol.

2. Color :

Color of the light is also an essential part of creating depth. It follows as shaping contrast between foreground, midground and background. You can use white light on your subject and throw a blue light on the background. It is done because faces are orange and background is blue as per the color wheel. It states that yellow is brightest and blue is dullest color. So Skin tones fall orange and it is the second brightest color.

3. Quantity :

Quantity address further Depth creation of your talent. This tells the amount of light used in a shot. Lights which are visible in the shot are called a practical. You can use this for the trim lighting of the subject and a fill.

4. Quality :

Last topic is quality. This tells how you can use the lights. You got to use a soft key light for your main subject as harsh lighting is not that flattering. But you may use harsh lighting for riming the subject because it may blend with your key light.

Editing :

Editing is also a major factor, mainly color grading. This grade helps to tweak your shot as per your liking. This is the best thing to do in post production. You can use various softwares for this purpose which I will cover in my next post. So stay tuned for that !!
