In March 2025, the city of Nagpur in Maharashtra experienced a flare-up of communal violence as right-wing Hindu groups sought the removal of Aurangzeb’s tomb. The unrest grew further as Vishva Hindu Parishad and Bajrang Dal members conducted a protest during which they burned an effigy of Aurangzeb and shouted slogans demanding the removal of the tomb. Adding to this, violence erupted between the Muslim groups and police due to the unfounded rumor claiming that protestors had burned a ‘chadar’ bearing Quranic texts.

The violence resulted in a fatality alongside 30 injuries, while also seeing over 105 individuals apprehended. To control the situation, a curfew was set in place. Also, the Archaeological Survey of India put a fence around the tomb of Aurangzeb while controlling access to the site. These events have contributed to a wider discussion concerning politicization of history and the use of heritage places in contemporary communal contexts. Politically, the contested approach towards Aurangzeb’s tomb derives from a politically charged sectarian narrative where history is distorted for the sake of political gain.

Along with other the targets of the criticism on ‘communal history’ lies the selective approach sprawled under perspectives on the past. It highlights the need for inclusive dialogue and responsible leadership to prevent the manipulative misuse of history for political ends.
