In a major step toward India's first manned spaceflight mission, the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) on May 11, 2025, put into orbit the Gaganyaan Test Vehicle (TV-D1) successfully. The mission had already tested the Crew Escape System — a critical safety system that will protect astronauts in case of an emergency at launch.
The test was carried out from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre, Sriharikota, and was welcomed with applause by scientists and space enthusiasts across the globe. The test vehicle carried a dummy crew module, which separated in mid-air and splashed down safely in the Bay of Bengal using parachutes.
This accomplishment comes after years of effort and is a crucial milestone in India's goal of sending humans to space by 2026. Gaganyaan, or "Sky Craft," will be the fourth country to have independent human spaceflight capabilities, after the U.S., Russia, and China. Prime Minister Modi congratulated ISRO and called the mission "a testament to India's technological prowess and scientific vision.
" With momentum building, ISRO is now focusing on the next step: an uncrewed orbital flight. India's space ambitions are no longer sky-high — they're orbit-bound.
