'Minecraft' Movie Spoiler-Free Review (2025) : Hit or a Miss? This movie basically made its budget back this weekend alone! Now it just needs to make marketing back and then profit. It’s a meme movie. We showed up for the meme. I love seeing a family video game film based on a globally popular game succeed despite bad reviews from the critics.

Minecraft is doing numbers. I saw it last night and the crowd was hyped. Seats filled to the max and everyone living off the memes. People at the cinema are going insane over the new Minecraft movie like it’s the end of Avengers Endgame. The movie is not so good, but the cinema experience was great. This is what box office numbers look like when you cater to the fans.
The formula is simple. Cinematic experience. The script doesn’t even have to be good or complex. Big win for audiences. Regardless of how you feel about the film, this is great news for theaters and the industry at large. The theaters DESPERATELY needed a hit movie to play, and Warner Bros. really needed a box office winner.

'Minecraft' Movie Spoiler-Free Review (2025): Hit or a Miss?
I’m really amazed by the success of this movie. I thought a live-action Minecraft would be a tough sell, but they proved me wrong. I’m honestly shocked that many people went to see it. Of course, the kids were, but the trailer looked so bad I didn’t see that coming. They really cooked this one. Jack Black is making a comeback in my mind, that's for sure.
The only reason it's doing so well is that it's Minecraft. It's literally the best-selling game of all time ever, (300+ million copies sold across all platforms). So, of course, it's going to perform well. Love it or hate it, Minecraft has way too much of a loyal fan base for the movie to flop. The good news is we will get a few more dozen of these types of movies over the next five years.

Was the Wait Worth It?
Yes, the wait is worth it. But, I am just so sick of this: “let’s take normal people and put them in a fantasy world.” Or put the fantasy characters in the real world. Like it’s just the laziest way to tell a story, let alone an established property like Minecraft. It's a cash-grabbing movie, nothing beyond that. An animation would work much better, but it was meant to be a cash grab from the beginning.

Still don’t see why they didn’t just take the Mario movie approach, considering that it made a billion dollars. An animated action adventure set within a world that just so happens to resemble Minecraft. And about a protagonist who actually resembles Steve. Not whatever this was.

Final Verdict:
If you go with the mindset that the Minecraft movie is not taking itself seriously, it’s actually a pretty good movie. It’s not supposed to be deep or a masterpiece. If you’re going in expecting something serious, you’re kind of missing what this is even trying to be.
