Crack.
A sharp, splintering noise—like a floorboard snapping under pressure—echoed from the kitchen.
He ran.
The hallway seemed longer now, each step thudding in his ears as he reached the kitchen entrance. He swung the door open, half-expecting something… or someone.
Nothing.
Just silence.
The kind of silence that didn’t feel empty—but watched.
The kitchen lights were off, the moonlight barely reaching in. He stepped closer to the window above the sink, glancing into the backyard.
That’s when he saw it.
A figure.
Standing motionless in the yard.
Face barely visible, but eyes—dark and fixed—staring directly at him through the glass.
Neither of them moved.
Not him.
Not the figure.
Only the wind began to rise.
And still… those eyes never blinked.
