This poem is very close to my heart as it was written by my father. It captures the emotional and powerful journey behind the formation of Uttarakhand as a separate state.
For a long time, the people living in the hills — simple, grounded, and deeply rooted in their culture — were ignored by the government. Just because they came from the mountains, they were seen as soft-spoken or insignificant, and their genuine struggles for basic facilities and representation were often overlooked.

But the truth is, behind their silence was strength. The people of the hills had fire in their hearts. They rose with unity, courage, and an unshakable determination to demand what was rightfully theirs — recognition, respect, and development tailored to their unique terrain and lifestyle.
After years of peaceful protests, sacrifices, and countless hardships, their voices finally echoed loud enough to shake the foundations of governance. On 9th November 2000, their dream came true — Uttarakhand was born.

उठ जाग ओ हाड़ पहाड़,
उठ जाग ओ हाड़ पहाड़,
क्यों सोया तू, क्यों खोया तू?
क्या वीरों को जन्म नहीं तूने,
क्या वीरों को पाला नहीं तूने?
क्या अतल नहीं तेरी कोख?
क्या हीरों-सी चमक नहीं तुझमें?
उठ जाग ओ हाड़ पहाड़,
क्यों खोया तू, क्यों सोया तू?
ललकार सुनी जब,
उठी हुंकार सी मन में,
ले अंगारे आँखों में,
छाती से हुंकार मारी।
उठा आंदोलन जनमानस में,
परवत राज्य की माँग लिए।
किया आवाहन – दृढ़ करो आंदोलन,
डोली शासन की चूलें, प्रतिकार लिया।
किया भोले लोगों पर अत्याचार,
प्राणों का बलिदान दिया,
जग का आवाहन किया।
हुई शासन की लानत मलानत,
जन का बलिदान समर्थ हुआ।
घोषित हुआ राज्य – उत्तराखंड,
प्रफुल्लित जन सामान्य हुआ।
नई भोर में, नई दिशा में,
राज्य प्रगति की ओर हुआ।
जनमानस के भीतर
नई कोपलों का प्रस्फुटन हुआ।
राज्य बढ़े प्रगति के पथ पर,
यह प्रयास करें जन।
स्वच्छ, सुंदर, प्रगतिशील हो –
अपना उत्तराखंड।
