This creation is in continuation of my previous creation on the psychology behind suicide. Having understood that suicide is a symptom arising from intense and heavy emotional pain, we must extend our helping hand to someone needy.

What can be the ways to help someone who is suicidal?

    1.) Listen Without Judgement

The essential point to understand is that a person devoid of emotional support has a very high possibility of committing suicide.

That is why, it is necessary to let the person open up about his feelings.

Let the person express without interrupting or offering an immediate solution.

Listening to them without judgment and with empathy helps them feel heard and valued.

    2.) Ask Directly About Suicide

A common myth surrounding suicide is that it should not be talked about or discussed with the concerned person.

It stems from the notion that it may plant the idea of suicide in someone's mind.

In reality, asking directly like, "Are you thinking about hurting yourself?" shows that you care and opens the door for honest conversation.

    3.) Offer Emotional Support

Assure them that they are not alone and that their feelings are valid.

Remind them that you care about them and will always be there when needed.

    4.) Encourage Professional Help

Suggest and encourage them to seek help from a mental health professional, therapist, or counselor.

You can find a resource for them or even go with them to an appointment.

5.) Remove Harmful Things from the Reach

If possible, reduce access to anything that is harmful and can be used for self-harm, like sharp objects, medications, and firearms.

    6.) Stay Connected

Loneliness increases the risk of suicide. Check-in regularly, offer to meet up, or be available on a phone call or text.

    7.) Encourage Towards Smaller Goals

Motivate and help them towards small and manageable goals, instead of overwhelming problems.

This will help increase confidence in them.

It will also rebuild a sense of control and hope.

8.) Don’t Leave Them Alone (If Immediate Risk)

If it seems that the person is in immediate danger of suicide, stay with them.

Seek help from emergency services, mental health helpline, family, friends, or relatives.

9.) Educate Yourself About Mental Health

Keep educating yourself regarding mental health issues.

This will help you deal with the situation and concerned person with more empathy, kindness, and knowledge making support more effective.
