As a little boy I used to believe that if you do bad things, you'll go to hell, and if you do the right you will go to heaven. Such a simplistic view of life! No real repercussions; just heaven and hell.
but then I realized there was more to life than the after-life. the quality of your life here on this planet. Sometimes we want to just believe that life is just determined by the good and the bad, but find out that there's more to that.

Haven't we seen bad people making it in life, while the good guys languish in poverty? Haven't we witnessed contracts being awarded to someone who didn't deserve it, while the qualified take nothing home? Life is not about the good and bad, or karma. It's all about strategy.
Strategy and Success: The Equation
The old adage that if you fail to plan you are planning to fail holds true. This is because failure is the only thing you don't really have to plan for, apart from a good fart.
I was in a church board meeting the other day, and I posed the question that we need to have a strategic plan, for, say, 3 years. The chairman answered that we already have aspirations for the whole year, and that's our plan. Oh my toe! I already felt like squirting the question that was eating me up: We wanted to open up another church in February, yet we had not by the second week of March, didn't even have the slightest hint of a plan. Has writing our year-long aspirations helped?
Having dreams and aspirations doesn't translate into having a strategy. In fact, sometimes having them in hordes might work against any form of a strategy. While those visions are valid and form an integral part of a plan, they need to be harmonized to work smoothly towards one direction.
This is because, sometimes, these visions might be competing for the same resources and time, making you unable to do something meaningful. Under these circumstances it is virtually impossible to succeed. This is why you need to sit down and put everything in its right box.
How to Birth a Strategic Plan
So, you have all these great ideas in your head and you don't know where to start. We all have been there. the difference is in what we did with them. Some tried to do everything at the same time, while others planned their actions before even starting.

Take the example of the church. Laying the foundation for a mega church, going back to repair the existing church-house, ditching that train of action mid-step and starting building extra offices, before the idea is fully birthed, embarking on upgrading the PA system, soliciting funds for live coverage and using the same to install CCTV cameras...….. Total chaos.
They have a collection of great visions, but they lack a strategy. As a result, the congregants burn out and decamp from the church.
Let's ask ourselves, what could have been done?
The first step is always to ask yourself, what is my overarching goal? If it's something like the church, they cam start by looking at their MVVs. What is their mission, their vision, their values? If their mission is to spread the word of God, then their efforts should naturally be aligned towards that goal. If their vision is to be the ultimate stop for spiritual needs in the region, then they should align themselves in that direction. in line with their values.
Am saying this because you realize, that some of the activities I already told you they took, are tied to the mission and Vision, but not all are essential. And that leads us to the next step.
Once you know what your grand goal is, you can now ask yo0urself, "What did I want to do, again?" After listing your small goals, you can easily categorize them in order of priority. Some of them may need to be done now, while others can wait, while others need to be done over and over. Still, you may find yourself ditching some goals and having to put in place some others along the way.
The idea is to have all your efforts supporting your overall goal. For example, the church may decide that their goal is to reach more people with the gospel. So they might ask themselves, how does a CCTV system help us reach more people, more offices, a mega church, a new branch....?
They might find themselves shelving some of those objectives and planning for new ones, like outreach missions and crusades. Those align very well with reaching more people. Church repairs and new branches would be a natural product of having more congregants, as well as a mega church. So, instead of planning for a funds drive, or soliciting funds from the few congregants, they would go flat-out on selling their church as-is.
At personal level, you should start by asking yourself, "Where do I see myself in 3 or so years, what is that one thing that matters most to me?" That is your definition of success. "I see myself owning a clearing company!" If that's your dream, all your resources should be directed in that direction.
Now that you have decided to start your own clearing company in 3 years, it's time to list whatever you need, hardware, software and skill-sets. Are you qualified for it? Do you have the capital outlay, what are the legal requirements, what steps do you need to reach there?
They told me that a good driver knows their destination before they even fire the vehicle up. And you are the driver of your life. More that on-the-road driving, you need to plan for every step before you kick off. Just saying that I will need to get a license is not enough. You need to have measurable goals, that are time-bound.
that is to say that every step has to be bound to a given time frame. This way, you will know what is supposed to be undertaken at any given time, and holds you accountable while also giving a sense of urgency. After all, there's no hurry in taking that class today while you can do it tomorrow, but when your schedule says you have to take it today because you have something else for tomorrow, you really must do it.

And that brings us to the last point. Stick to your plan. There's no need spending hours planning a strategic plan if you are not going to stick to it. Even if an opportunity arises along the way, you will ditch it if it doesn't align with your strategy. This is because some opportunities, however enticing they are, might just serve to side-track your from achieving your goals.
Remember, if it doesn't lead to the goal you wrote down, it isn't success for you. As said earlier, success looks different for different people. If you follow the simple steps I outlined in this creation, you are definitely going to achieve success in your life. Why wait for karma while you can do something. If karma is real, then it can pick you on the road, instead of not doing something and realizing that luck was just another word in the dictionary.
