I remembered my student’s work from last year, which left me pondering the true impact of modern technology on humanity. His paper focused on the contributions of modern technology to academic advancement, emphasizing how it has transformed education by making knowledge more accessible and learning more efficient. He highlighted how inventions like the printing press, telephone, and the internet have broken communication barriers, making academic research and knowledge dissemination easier. He also discussed how digital tools such as virtual lectures, augmented reality, and artificial intelligence have improved classroom engagement and inclusivity.

While his arguments were compelling, they raised a lingering doubt in my mind: can modern technology also be a problem for humanity? Despite its undeniable benefits, its misuse cannot be ignored. The distractions of social media, the rise in academic dishonesty through plagiarism and AI-generated content, and the over-reliance on technology for learning are growing concerns. The very tools that have made education more accessible can also hinder critical thinking and independent problem-solving when used improperly.

This contrast between technology’s benefits and its potential drawbacks remains an important discussion. While it has propelled academic growth, it is crucial to ensure its responsible use to maximize its advantages while minimizing its negative effects.
