Every Nation is built up of people coming from diverse environments. Due to this unique diversity, all the people have something to say and those voices shape up and gradually transform in the form of a range of stories that travel from one generation to another. As a child, I grew up listening to different stories from the historical tales as well as reading short stories on different historical events that I found interesting. At School, I loved reading History textbooks and it became one of my favorite subjects.

As I learnt more about these diverse historical tales, the following key learnings stayed with me:
1. Strong leadership- It was often depicted that the respective kingdom had multiple responsibilities towards its people in various regards, whether it was their common welfare, special needs, justice to be delivered, economic challenges, any potential safety issue from the other kingdoms in terms of revolt or an upcoming challenge and many other such related issues. Since the decision-making involved so many people, it might be both challenging and crucial at the same time. Hence, I think the key learning here is that leadership skills were very important here as all situations would have been different and all would have required a different navigation lens in order to be able to deal with the situations and their respective decision-making dilemmas in the most efficient and an effective manner.
2. Empathetic listening-Listening to the other people’s problems and concerns with the aim of making sound judgement and a decision that gives a solution to the people. At the same time, in case any kingdom required some kind of support in alliance to fight off a potential invasion. Different kingdoms faced various kinds of challenges in order to run the kingdom smoothly along with being fully aware that the smallest of actions carried with them a great range of responsibilities towards the safety and well-being of the common people, the kingdom’s army, the safety of royal family and the king itself along with various other citizens residing in the kingdom. Hence, the key learning here is that all these decisions required consideration of all of these above aspects and the foreseen outcomes that they might bring along. This could be possible only when the kingdom tries to understand the situation holistically from the lens of the entire kingdom as well trying to sensitize with the potential challenges of the other kingdoms.
3. Strong perseverance- Many times, the historical tales depicted that the kingdoms faced unanticipated invasions which required immediate preparedness to counter the difficult situations. This needed the constant motivation to keep going and showing up to take appropriate actions considering the collective welfare of the people. Here, the key learning is to be persistent in the direction of the kingdom’s future vision and to also take things in a healthy spirit even in the face of an upcoming failure and uncertainty.

Rs. 14994. Courage to dream- Every kingdom had its own vision and outlook towards the kingdom’s future and growth. This vision required an appropriate strategy to work towards the respective goal and to maintain composure even when things were falling apart and there was any kind of resistance from the ministerial cabinet, royal family, queen or the common people. It was important to ensure that the entire kingdom was aligned with the king’s vision and that there was a mutual alliance for the same. Even when there was a situation of a conflict, the kings themselves had to uplift the motivation of their forces so that they continue to act bravely towards their common goal. Here, the key learning is to be able to see a dream even in the situation of a crisis and to keep working towards it keeping the courage intact.
5. Observational research- The historical tales also depict that various kingdoms faced major challenges in case their strategies did not work or were flawed (in case they lacked a proper direction and vision). In case a kingdom suffered immensely due to a strategic failure, many other kingdoms adopted a coping mechanism in order to deal with it efficiently in case they face a similar situation in the near future. The key learning here is to observe the actions of the other people in our natural environment and the social groups. Further, conducting research based on our existing understanding on how we could possibly deal with that similar kind of a situation and what could be our potential action plan for its sound implementation.

History and its various tales have time and again depicted the gradual transformation on how things have unfolded over a period of time. It also helps us to get a sense of how people made decisions in the ancient times and what are the takeaways from the same. As these tales have different interpretations, we might not know the exact circumstances of the various decisions that kingdoms made, but still based on the scope of the available information, we could gather our specific learnings. I think we could also enhance our overall critical analysis skills as the historical tales also present complex situations that often required a range of alternative solutions before finalizing on any particular strategic approach. Additionally, we could also enhance our current understanding towards the ancient civilizations, arts and crafts, music and dance forms along with many other aspects of the cultural heritage. We could also practice introspection and think of what other actions could have been taken in the History if there was any scope of a different approach to the same. Further, we could also make a list of how we could apply some of our key learnings from the Historical tales into our daily life and what possible contributions could that have. Hence, these could be some of the possible merits of revisiting History!
