Emotional Intelligence is a very interesting and talked about concept that I came across. This made me to delve a bit deeper to understand what is Emotional Intelligence and what are some of the ways to possibly develop Emotional Intelligence. Further, exploring what could be some of the key merits of developing and working on our Emotional Intelligence.

Emotional Intelligence being a comprehensive concept can be defined in various ways based on its subjective understanding. For example- One way to think of it as a unique skill to understand our own emotions as well as make an effort to understand the emotions of the other people around us.
Some of the following ways stood out for me:
1. Introspection-This is the initial step to develop more awareness about our self and to accelerate the process of self-awareness. We can follow this as per our suitability and when we have a moment to sit with ourselves in calmness. Self-awareness through Introspection will help us to understand our emotions in a much better manner.
2. Building Empathy-Empathy is the ability to understand the other person’s emotions and to comprehend where they are coming from. It is one of the core aspects of Emotional Intelligence. Listening to another person in a non-judgmental way and making notes to understand things better, asking them clarification questions to understand their situation better could help in building empathy to some extent.
3. Acknowledging emotions- Along with understanding the emotions of others, it is equally important to understand your own emotions in a non-judgmental manner. This will require creating a safe space for ourselves and acknowledging the emotions that we come across. At this step, we must remember that due to the complex nature of emotions, we will feel various kinds of emotions. Here, the only aim is to be a bit more friendly to your own self.
4. Meditation-Since this is one of the greatest ways to relax, it will certainly help us to manage our stress and anxiety to a greater extent. As the mind gets into a relaxed space, we will notice that self-awareness and creativity will also get a boost. This will also make us more aware of our emotions and how do we generally feel about ourselves, based on this awareness we can find and create different ways to deal with our emotions (this could contribute towards enhancing our Emotional Intelligence as well).

5. Gratefulness journal- This will help us to always be mindful of all the things that we are thankful for. Here, we can create a list of all the things that worked for us and what do we actually feel about the things which we have already achieved and how has the journey till now helped us to evolve for the better. Revisiting this journal will act as one of the key motivators whenever we need a quick boost to our overall morale. This will also train our mind to look at the bright side of things and as we develop this habit, our creativity will also increase which will give us different ideas for creative problem- solving (helping to develop Emotional Intelligence directly/indirectly).
6. Identifying motivators-This step will include enlisting all the things that motivate us and push us to keep going and showing up towards our improvement journey. This will also mean including these motivators in our daily schedule so that our motivation can be nourished regularly and this will act as a nudge to keep working towards the path of developing Emotional Intelligence as we will keep showing up to act towards it bit by bit.
7. Connecting with the Divine Universe- This can consist of a range of activities as per our suitability. Spending some time with the nature, gardening plants, watching the birds, observing the beauty of the sunrise and chanting. There could be a lot of different ways to practice this step in whatever way that suits us the best. This practice will impact our happiness positively and will give a direct/indirect boost to the development of Emotional Intelligence.
8. Identifying strengths and areas of development- This stage will consist of jotting down all our strengths in the journey to develop Emotional Intelligence and what are the areas where there is a scope for improvement. Here we can make a monthly action plan for the identified area/s where we have the scope for improvement.
9. Positive affirmation- This can act as a way of self-healing where we can give ourselves some space to recover from any recurring fear, stress-causing thoughts. This can be practiced by talking to ourselves as we might talk to some other person who is in distress. This implementation will vary differently for everyone. Here we can also talk aloud in front of the mirror if that helps us better. Overall, this stage will help us to increase our motivation and control any recurring stress and anxiety. This step would give a boost to Emotional Intelligence as it would indicate how we are perceiving and managing our own emotions.
10. Create a review tracker- This can act as a checkpoint mechanism where we can consolidate our key learnings from step1-step9. Here we can list all our key takeaways in this journey and what are some of the things that we would like to accomplish in the near future.
Emotional Intelligence is a very diverse and a comprehensive concept that might require working simultaneously on various aspects. Its implementation will vary differently as per the way we evolve in our unique life journey. Developing and implementing Emotional Intelligence can add to the list of our strengths and could assist in dealing with complex situations, and effective decision-making. This can also give a boost to our overall well-being and in this way we could also help and motivate others to enhance their well-being as well. Lastly, Emotional Intelligence might also help us in achieving our life goals (directly/indirectly) as it would increase our self-awareness which will result in better clarity of mind and the related thoughts.
