I was about to take a short nap, trying to decide what content to create next. As I closed my eyes, a strange thought came to me—are there Bible stories that pastors and priests never talk about in church?
I couldn't ignore the question. Instead of sleeping, I grabbed my phone and started searching. And I found something shocking—a prophet, an angel ready to kill him, and a donkey that started talking.
I've heard a lot of Bible stories, but why is no one talking about this one? It's mysterious, unexpected, and has a lesson that can change the way we think about faith. So here it is—the first part of this series, bringing you Bible stories you've probably never heard in church.
THE STORY– A PROPHET ALMOST KILLED BY AN ANGEL (NUMBERS 22:21-35)
This is a story about Balaam, a prophet, who thought he was following God's will—but was actually walking straight toward danger.
It started when a king named Balak wanted Balaam to curse the Israelites. Balaam asked God if he should go, and at first, God told him "no". But then, when Balaam asked again, God let him go. That's when things took a strange turn.

As Balaam rode his donkey on the road, an invisible angel stood in his path, holding a sword. Balaam couldn't see the angel, but his donkey could. The donkey suddenly stopped, trying to avoid the angel. Balaam got angry and beat the donkey, forcing it to move. But then, something even more bizarre happened—the donkey spoke and asked Balaam why he was hitting it!

At that moment, God opened Balaam's eyes, and he finally saw the angel, sword in hand, ready to kill him. The angel told Balaam, "I was going to strike you down, but your donkey saved your life."

Imagine that! A prophet, supposedly close to God, was about to die—and the only reason he was saved was because of a donkey.
HERE ARE FIVE POSSIBLE REASONS WHY THIS STORY IS RARELY DISCUSSED (BASED ON MY RESEARCH)

1. IT CHALLENGES THE IDEA THAT PROPHETS ARE ALWAYS RIGHT Many people believe that if someone is called by God, they automatically know what's right. But this story proves that even prophets can be "blind" to God's real message. This is uncomfortable because it means that even religious leaders today could be wrong sometimes.
2. THE STORY IS CONFUSING AND CONTRADICTORY AT FIRST GLANCE At first, God told Balaam not to go with King Balak's men. But then, when Balaam asked again, God said he could go. Later, an angel appeared to stop him. "Did God change His mind?" Some people find this part difficult to understand, so they prefer to skip it.
3. A TALKING DONKEY SOUNDS TOO STRANGE The idea of an animal talking like a human sounds more like something from a fairy tale than the Bible. Some people might find it hard to take the story seriously because of this.
4. IT TEACHES THAT EVEN "SMALL" THINGS CAN CARRY GOD'S MESSAGE Most sermons focus on God speaking through great prophets, angels, or miracles. But in this story, God's warning came through a donkey! This goes against the usual way people expect God to communicate.
5. IT EXPOSES HUMAN STUBBORNNESS Balaam was so focused on doing what "he wanted" that he ignored the signs. How often do people do the same? Some might avoid this story because it forces us to reflect on how we, too, "ignore God's warnings" when we are too focused on our own plans.
SELF REFLECTION
Based on my self reflection, this story has a powerful lesson: "Sometimes, the truth comes from the most unexpected places."
Balaam was a prophet, yet he was blind. His donkey—an ordinary animal—saw the angel before he did.
Think about that. How often do we ignore small signs in life because we think we know better? Maybe God is speaking to us through a friend, a mistake, a delay, or a random event. But are we listening?
This story reminds us to "stay humble". Just because we think we are right doesn't mean we truly understand what God wants.
FINAL THOUGHTS
As I was lying down, I never expected this story to hit me so hard. But now, I can't stop thinking about it.
How many times in life do we keep pushing forward, convinced we are right—only to realize we were walking toward disaster?
I felt a sudden smile and happiness for unexpectedly choosing this to be my content today. I never read the Bible, but having this unexpected thought seems like a great idea to explore some very interesting stories in the Bible in a cool way.
I also remembered the advice I once received—to read the Bible from Genesis to Revelation. But to be honest, that sounded boring to me and I struggled to absorb it and didn't feel truly engaged. However, with this style of learning, I get to explore parts of the Bible that genuinely interest me while discovering stories that are rarely discussed.
So, before I finally take my nap, I leave you with this thought: "Who or what is the "donkey" in your life that God is using to wake you up? Are you listening, or are you ignoring the signs?"
