I have always wondered what exactly does self-awareness means and what could be some of the ways to improve our self-awareness, along with the factors that might influence the process of improving self-awareness. Everyone attaches a different meaning to Self-awareness. We can also think of it as the unique ability to identify and understand one’s own inherent capabilities, strengths, developmental areas as well as sentiments, beliefs and the respective actions that we take.

As I delved deeper, some of the following points stood out for me:
1. Introspection-This will mainly aim at spending some time with our thoughts. During this time, we can practice meditation or any other mindful exercise that we would like to follow in order to engage at a deeper level with ourselves. Here, the main task is to allocate some time each day to know ourselves a bit better.
2. Weekly awareness journal-This journal will consist of all the points that you have learnt about yourself during the introspection stage. We can jot down all the things that have realized about ourselves and what do we feel about them and how could we possibly work towards those aspects. This will be a safe space so just let it be a free flow. Since, this will be a weekly activity, we will get a chance to revisit and edit it regularly (weekly basis).
3. Recording traits from daily experiences-This step would consist of taking note of whatever inner/outer traits that we come across about ourselves as a part of our daily life experiences. It would be good to dive a bit deeper and understand as to what are some of the common patterns and qualities along with any other developmental areas that you might have observed.
4. Monthly check diary-This step will consist of mainly 2 aspects- How do we plan to improve on our developmental areas as well as mapping its gradual progress (actions taken in this regard), this will also help us to make a brief note on small milestones that we will achieve after taking note of the gradual progress made.
5. Upskilling initiatives- We can engage in various kinds of upskilling activities such as taking up a course, attending workshops and training programs. These activities can be aligned in the areas of our interests and goals or these initiatives could also be around any new skill that we might want to learn and explore. This initiative will enhance our self-awareness to some extent as we will surely come to know something new about ourselves!

6. Nurturing self-talk-This step will act as an inner reflection exercise for us. We can spend 2-5 minutes each day and start practicing this in our own comfortable way. This will consist of appreciating all our efforts, being grateful for whatever things have worked for us and reminding ourselves of all the hard work that we have done over the years to develop and work on ourselves.
Self-awareness is a gradual process and will evolve over a period of time. However, we should also be mindful of various aspects that could influence our self-awareness journey. Some of these aspects are: our previous experience, social customs, natural environment and individual values. Given our unique life journeys, all these mentioned factors will play different subjective roles when it comes to improving the self-awareness aspect. For example- Social customs might influence someone’s journey more than another person for whom individual values are more of a priority and vice-versa. Hence, having a clear classification regarding these aspects will also contribute significantly towards the journey. Building self-awareness is like adding another milestone towards our strengths. It would also impact various spheres of our life positively such as creating a vision towards goals, sound judgments, increase in motivation, critical thinking and being more productive. There could be many other positive outcomes as well depending upon our life journey and the impact of self-awareness on it. However, the greatest reward that self-awareness can give us is that it can create a pathway of continuous improvement for us which is related to our own life and it will surely make significant contributions towards it either directly or indirectly.
