The Legacy of Underappreciated
Poets Many have received good accolades while many more remain unpawned for their outstanding achievements. About 16th-century Indian poet-saint Tulsidas, it is said that his devotional Hindi retelling of the Ramayana came to be known as Ramcharitmanas, which made the story available to the masses. The Persian Sufi poet Attar of Nishapur wrote, in the 12th century, a masterful allegorical masterpiece about spiritual enlightenment called The Conference of the Birds. Charlotte Smith (18th century) impacted Romantic poetry with her moving sonnets, although her male contemporaries continue to overshadow her. Forugh Farrokhzad (1934–1967) was an Iranian modernist poet whose bold and introspective poetry challenged social norms. Though lesser known, the writings of these poets are timeless and very deep in literature.
