Thank you for taking the time to see my article. It’s lovely to have you here today, let’s get started!
Do you also come across situations where it gets difficult to distinguish between your own thoughts regarding something and the actual reality? I find myself wondering about this question a lot of times. Further, this kind of situation can also create confusion and might pose a challenge to thinking clearly.
Sometimes we might come across a state of conflict in our mind when it comes to evaluating the actual scenario and our own thinking. I am often surrounded by thoughts such as-Am I just overthinking? Is this situation really that bad? Was there any other way to fix this better? Is it all my fault? The spiral continues!
The fear of uncertainty most likely increases our vulnerability and I believe this situation makes us very uncomfortable with any new situation that we might come across. A real situation is more factual in nature and our thinking behind it is more interpretation-based, which is also driven by how we actually feel about that situation and our emotional well-being at the moment. Due to this aspect, both thinking and the real situation jumble up with each other. However, challenge here is the mindful categorization of both of these aspects.
The reason why we need this categorization is that when our vulnerability increases due to some change that causes uncertainty, we might mix both the ingredients and end up creating a wrong dish! This can further trigger stress that can increase our overthinking and impact our overall well-being. Hence, it becomes very important to be aware and be able to distinguish when our thoughts start to create a parallel reality, which is different from the actual situation.
We can certainly follow some strategies to cope with the same:
· Creating a reasoning activity to segment (what is the real thing that took place and what is my thought).
· Talking to your own thoughts just as it was some other person (mindful discussion to achieve mediation).
· Listening to some motivational music- as a relaxation technique (this can help to declutter the confusion that might have been created).
· Research analysis-we can prepare a short questionnaire for our own self with different domains (specific impact areas) and fill it when we are a bit relaxed (for accurate results).
· Alternatively, we can also create a quick checklist-with yes/no options (with specific scenarios-this can be a bit more direct in nature).
These strategies could assist in mindful distinguishing of our thoughts and its actual reality.
There can certainly be various other techniques to distinguish between both our Thoughts and the Reality. As we all have subjective experiences, these techniques could also be different for everyone. The trick here is not to let this confusion between Thoughts and Reality dull our own motivation and positivity! There are two main aims here: firstly, we should be able to identify whenever there is a difference between our thoughts and the real scenario at present, secondly-we could create different strategies (suitable to our situation) for a mindful differentiation between the both.
Thanks a lot for your time. I will catch up soon and, in the meantime, wishing you a very pleasant day ahead!
