The desire to have peace in life is very necessary. It's a ritual. It's a ritual that you do every day. I can't tell you how important meditation is to me, how it changes me, how it makes my life better and better. I sang it. This is very important. My problem is that it's fashionable and a lot of people do it. But it's something I've been doing for years. It goes beyond the fashionable of thinking.
So the first thing about meditation is that it's Ritual.
It's a ritual you do every day. So I do it in the morning when I wake up. Some people like to do it at the end of the day. They're all the same, but eventually the mind relaxes and becomes easier to control. I was almost happy to be alive and not die the next night. It was the view I saw in the morning. I am happy to welcome the arrival of a new dawn. It is a beautiful feeling to look out at the world every day and say, okay, I am starting my day. It is wonderful.
Everything is new. A new day has begun. If you do this everyday, you will do it with passion. Doing these kinds of things every day will change you. It will change your mind very powerfully. So sometimes you are faced with a situation where everything comes from you. People are yelling at you. Your anxiety is increasing. You're getting a little cranky, etc. I need to think about the road. I'd rather do something. Thoughts don't work like that. Because you practice it every day, you don't have to try.It will always be inside you. So every morning I rest and calm my mind. I try to get rid of all these negative thoughts. I don't have to try. This happens to me all the time. Why is it possible to answer? No problem. It's not a big deal. It'll just make you bored. Now all sorts of thoughts will come to my mind. Oh, you didn't answer this person. Where are you going tomorrow? Are you going cycling tomorrow? Oh, you'd better call back later. I left when they arrived, no problem. I’m trying to do something important in my life. These niggling thoughts, I’m worrying about them at 7 in the morning, I wouldn’t change anything worrying about them. This process will now follow you every day. So when you start having thoughts that bother you and things start bothering you and hindering your goals, they will go away on their own.
So the other thing is, I talk a lot about facing death, and facing death itself, frankly. When you think about this, you will inevitably think of death, separation, and similar anxieties. It's almost automatic, isn't it? So he suggests that you first accept your emotions and don't try to suppress them, but rather try to understand them deeply. So I always say, you're here this morning, you're still alive. This is what's happening around you. You look at a tree in front of you, a patch of ivy. There's a blue sky above you. That's what it is. The world is now all but your thoughts. And all of that will be gone. It means nothing to you. You're going to sleep. You're going to sink into the ground and sleep forever, aren't you? So Robert, think about it, think about it deeply, and realize how beautiful and wonderful it is to be alive this morning.
It's calming. It gives you a daily ritual, something to look forward to. It can help you cope with the stress of facing death. It helps you determine what's important in your life. It makes you feel like you're not important. Okay, and it feels liberating and empowering to know that this is a part of you that doesn't require any effort. So what you have to do is try to make it a habit, because if it doesn't become a habit, it won't work for you. A few minutes a day. You have five minutes.
Try all kinds of ideas. You can try transcendental meditation. It's smart to be mindful. Five minutes in the morning. Okay. Now I practice for about 45 minutes every morning. I started with five minutes because I wanted to keep increasing it, and so on. It changed me. That's what it did to me.
