5 Paid Writing Sites for Beginner Writers

    Introduction

In this piece, I will share five beginner-friendly paid writing platforms. I’ll break these into two groups: first, there are three that act like social media and payments based on views, and then two that function as writing boards where you take on jobs for clients. Let me go into each platform with pros and cons, along with my experience and earnings.

Platforms That Pay by the Audience

    Medium.com

Medium, my favorite Twitter + WordPress type of platform. When paying Medium members read your posts, you earn a share of their membership fees based on how many of them read your posts. There are no ads, so it is a direct connection between writer and reader. Payments process via Stripe, and I’ve made over $50k—probably close to $100k. It pays approximately two cents for each view, or around $20 for every thousand views.

How to Start: Register with your email address, build a profile, and start writing. But you need 100 followers to get paid, and this, of course, takes time. Make the most out of the community; don't be shy and leave comments; no follow for follow.

Pros: You can write whatever you want and start publishing right away. It’s an amazing place to build an audience.

Cons: Getting to a hundred followers can take a while, and Stripe is only available in selected countries, so the payment options are limited for many.

    Simily

Simily: A free publishing platform for creative writing pays 2 cents per view. There’s no follower threshold like on Medium, and you can immediately start earning.

Getting Started: Sign up, make a profile, and write your first post to start earning.

Pros: Very good for creative writing, beginner-friendly, pays well, always made transparent

Cons: It’s not clear how stories get promoted, and there’s a $10 minimum payout threshold. These pay rates can change as the platform evolves.

    Vocal

Vocal is a cross between Medium and Simily (They both include ad revenue). Writers earn $6 for every thousand views if they are part of Vocal+, which costs $10 monthly.

Getting started: Create an account, write, and publish stories. Get involved in cash-rich writing prompts.

Pros: Simple for novices, on ways to make money, including non-member views and writing challenges.

Pros: You can bind an Amazon account, App Store account, or PayPal account and make some money if you're good. Cons: Pay rates are lower than Medium and Simily; membership/outcome is restrictive for Vocal+. Please note the approval process can be slow—it can take 10-12 hours after a story is submitted to be approved for publication.

    Job Board Platforms

    Scripted

Job board—You apply for writing gigs through Scripted. The acceptance rate is roughly 5%, so it’s competitive.

How to Get Started: You apply, take a grammar-heavy test, and submit a portfolio. Selected writers will receive job offers and can pitch their price.

Pros: Scripted offers fair pay, with a base rate of seven cents a word. There is a range of job opportunities and long-term client relationships that imply stability.

Pros: You’re well accepted, and the timing can be erratic. You will likely need to write proposals without payment assurances.

    Textbroker

Back in my first post, I slammed Textbroker for its poor rates of pay and convoluted hiring process. But it does offer a little bit of experience for newcomers.

The Intro Sacat Just fill out your info and submit a writing sample and get a star rating, which gets you assigned a pay rate. To make matters worse, Textbroker is not currently accepting new writer sign-ups.

Pros: A beginner-friendly earning platform, but at low rates.

Pros: The pay is low, but the application is somewhat unclear.

    Conclusion

They each provide fantastic opportunities to all beginner writers. Job boards and audience-driven income and everything in between, there’s a platform for that. Understand that none of these are overnight money schemes, but a little effort on your part will lead you to earning from your writing.

    Happy writing!
