The Hydrogen Revolution: Fueling Our Future

    Recently, scientists discovered that billions of tons of hydrogen gas are likely buried in rocks and underground reservoirs beneath the Earth's surface. That is the type of hydrogen that could become the energy game-changer. Scientists estimate that 2% of these reserves, approximately 124 billion tons, will be sufficient for all the hydrogen that would be needed to achieve net-zero carbon emissions over the next 200 years.

    Why Hydrogen?

    Hydrogen is an easy source of energy that is utilised for different purposes like usage in vehicles, industrial processes and also for generating electricity. Using hydrogen as a fuel releases water vapour only as a gaseous effluent by-product; therefore, it's an environmentally friendly alternative to fossil fuel. Therefore, hydrogen serves an important function globally in fighting back greenhouse emissions and climate change.

    Future Prospect of Hydrogen

    This research provides us with hydrogen stockpiles almost two times that found in known natural gas here on Earth. Despite this, the possibility of being able to use nearly a significant percent of our energy requirements through hydrogen is still tremendous despite the reasons behind it owing to some sort of technological advancements. Unfortunately, much of these reserves of hydrogen cannot be tapped immediately due to reasons like deep off-shore places not easily explored.

    2. Industry: Hydrogen is used for many industrial applications, including refining petroleum, making chemicals, and producing steel. Industries can easily reduce their carbon footprint easily by using hydrogen instead of fossil fuels.

    3. Electricity Generation: Hydrogen can be used to generate electricity through fuel cells or in a combustion reaction with oxygen. This way, clean power is generated efficiently where it is needed, especially in remote locations that are not connected to traditional power grids.

    4. Space Heating: Hydrogen can be used in home and building heating, as a substitute for fossil fuel-based heating through natural gas, for instance.

    Challenges

    Despite this huge promise as a future fuel, there are quite a number of challenges that must be addressed. These include;

    1. Extraction and Storage: Hydrogen is extracted from underground reserves, a complex and costly operation. Storing it also poses a serious challenge. Scientists are working to develop efficient methods of extraction as well as safe storage.

    2. Infrastructure: The establishment of hydrogen production, distribution and refueling stations would be extremely expensive. To develop a feasible hydrogen infrastructure, a joint effort has to be shown by the government and private firms.

    3. Cost: The production of hydrogen is also more expensive than conventional fossil fuels. Still, with increasingly efficient technology popping up, the production cost of hydrogen would come down.

    4. Public Awareness: The public needs to be made aware of the potential of hydrogen as a source of clean energy for mass assimilation. Further, an increase in public awareness and consumer demand will drive the revolution towards energy systems based on hydrogen.

    The Way Ahead

    Hydrogen has much potential as a fuel, waiting to become a reality fairly soon. Further research and development would yield considerably more efficient and cost-effective production of hydrogen. So, hydrogen will play an important role in successfully achieving climate objectives if the world continues to focus on sustainable sources of energy.
