Start Creating...StartStartFive months ago, I embarked on a journey that transformed my life in unexpected ways. As a senior citizen, I had been dealing with high blood pressure for years, relying on daily medication to keep it in check. Today, I no longer take those pills. Yoga has given me a new lease on life, enhancing my health, focus, patience, and even adding a certain glow to my face.
Yoga might seem overwhelming at first, with countless classes, instructors, and online resources vying for attention. But you don’t need to drown in information. Yoga is beautifully simple at its core. You can start right where you are, without any fancy equipment or prior knowledge.
One of the first exercises I practiced was Anulom Vilom, often called alternate nostril breathing. It’s as simple as using your thumb and ring finger to alternately close one nostril while breathing in through the other. This rhythmic breathing calms the mind, reduces stress, and improves oxygen flow.
The second exercise I adopted was Kapalabhati, or “shining skull.” This involves rapid abdominal movements where you exhale forcefully and let your stomach expand and contract naturally. It not only strengthens your core but also detoxifies your body and clears your mind. If you’re unsure how to proceed, there are excellent instructional videos on YouTube to guide you.
Another simple yet powerful exercise is the Cat-Cow Pose. Begin on all fours, with your wrists aligned under your shoulders and knees under your hips. Inhale as you arch your back (Cow), looking upward, and exhale as you round your spine (Cat), tucking your chin to your chest. This gentle flow stretches your spine, improves flexibility, and aligns your body.
Let me emphasize this: Yoga is not about religion. Whether you follow Christianity, Islam, Buddhism, or no religion at all, yoga welcomes you. It’s a way of life, a path to harmony between your body and mind. While its roots are in ancient India, its benefits transcend cultural and religious boundaries.
My journey with yoga has not only healed my body but also brought mental clarity and emotional stability. If you’re hesitant to start, remember that all you need is a little time each day to focus on your breath and movements. Begin today—your future self will thank you.
