The world does not work as we think it should. The sooner we understand this, the better it is. Everything is not always in our hands and sometimes even if something happens, unknowingly we do not understand or appreciate those things. Vikram's grandmother said, keeping her hand on his shoulder.

It had been three days since Vikram's mother had passed away. It was night and a crowd of relatives had gathered in the house, mattresses had been laid on the floor for everyone to sleep. Everyone was sitting sadly and talking softly among themselves. The thirteenth day was still 10 days away and all the remaining tasks had to be completed. Now only his father and grandmother were left in Vikram's house, he did not have any brother or sister of his own. Grandfather had died long ago and now he was not able to bear the pain of his mother's departure. Just then, there was a sound of something falling in the kitchen, Vikram's grandmother slowly got up and went towards the kitchen. Water was scattered on the kitchen floor and a glass of water was lying beside it. Grandma's eyes fell on the kitchen window, and she saw a cat going outside. Grandma picked up the glass and placed it on the slab and wiped the water with a cloth and kept it aside. When she came back to the verandah, Vikram was not there. Looking for him, Grandma reached the balcony which was right next to Vikram's room. Vikram was lost looking at the sky, the floor near his feet was a little wet, meaning it was clear that Vikram had cried a lot after coming alone.

Grandma also started consoling Vikram while hiding her tears and asked him to sleep. Vikram's room was separate, the rest of the people were sleeping in the common room and Vikram also went to his bed now. The wall clock was showing 1 am. Vikram was far away from sleep. At the same time, 2-4 books suddenly fell from the wooden book shelf in Vikram's room. A cat was seen running towards the other room with a meowing sound. Vikram got up from his bed and started keeping the books in their place. While keeping the books, his eyes fell on a book covered with a red cloth kept in the row number one, which was probably from his grandfather's time and perhaps he used to read it. Vikram's grandfather had died before his birth, that is why he did not get his grandfather's love. Thinking something, Vikram took that book in his hand and started turning its pages. The book was very old and some of its pages had also almost melted and perhaps no one had opened it after grandfather's death. Some tantra-mantra and sadhna methods were written in that book. Vikram's grandmother used to tell him in his childhood that his grandfather used to do puja-paath and sadhna and used to go to a nearby temple where there used to be an Ashoka tree nearby. Thinking about these things, Vikram turned several pages one after the other and his eyes stopped at one place. A mantra was written in bold letters which had melted a little from the bottom. This written mantra was used to contact the person after his death, for which some rules were also mentioned along with the method. Vikram, immersed in the memories of his mother, kept reading that book the whole night. We can understand very well what was going on in his mind now. Before the first ray of the morning, Vikram had made up his mind that now he will talk to his mother and ask many questions which were troubling him inside. There were three very strict rules of that sadhna which were as follows: [1.] This sadhna has to be done secretly while being a non-vegetarian, without telling anyone. [2.] Do not take bath for 7 days and do not indulge in any kind of sexual activity. [3.] Apart from this ritual, no other puja or sadhna is to be done, the ritual has to be started between 1 to 3 in the night and on the last day of the sadhna, the things used in the ritual have to be buried by digging a pit under an Ashoka tree before sunrise. Understanding the entire process, Vikram started following it from the next day itself. In his desire to talk to his mother, he had taken a step that could have many consequences but he was not worried about it.

    First night:

Wrapped himself in just a red towel and sat in a corner of his room and started chanting as per the method written in the book. The ritual material included chicken feet, lizard tail, incense sticks, three types of grains, diyas and red flowers. Vikram was successful in doing this ritual for 5 consecutive days. By doing this ritual for 5 consecutive days, the sorrow of mother's departure and any kind of fear or loneliness started to disappear from Vikram's mind. A strange peace came in his mind. He had reduced talking in his house. The family members did not pay much attention to this change of his because this behavior was inevitable for a few days after his mother's departure.

    Seventh day:

After performing the last ritual, Vikram buried all the material used at around 2:30 in the night under the Ashoka tree near the same temple where his grandfather used to go for worship. Coming back home, he lay down on the bed quietly and didn't know when he fell asleep. After an hour, Vikram felt some moisture on his face. Vikram quickly opened his eyes, he did not find anyone. He looked at the wall clock and it was 3:35, there was complete silence outside and inside the house, only the sound of crickets was coming from outside. Knowing it to be his illusion, he tried to sleep again and after some time he fell asleep. Vikram was still half asleep when he felt very thirsty, he wanted to get up and go to the kitchen to get water but he was unable to get up. It seemed as if something was stopping him from getting up. Suddenly he felt a tremendous weight on his chest and his eyelids were also not opening. Somehow he could not believe what he saw with his half-open eyes!! Vikram, who was drenched in sweat, was unable to speak. He wanted to scream but the voice seemed to have disappeared from his throat. A woman with long hair was sitting on his chest and licking his cheeks. He had never seen that woman before. Suddenly, Vikram's body became light. That woman was now on her feet. By now, Vikram had understood that he was not dreaming. What was happening was 100% true.

If you cut Vikram, there would be no blood. With trembling lips, she asked, "How did you come inside? Who are you?" With a long smile, that woman said: "I am the one whom you have called." Vikram (stuttering): But when did I...? I just wanted to talk to my deceased mother.

Continuing her smile, that woman again said, "You have called me. If you want, I can love you as a mother or as a wife." Vikram was speechless after hearing all this. I don't know what she did unknowingly? Vikram could not say anything. After about 2 minutes of silence, that woman said, you will have to answer, my coming will not go in vain. If you do not say anything, then I will take you along with your family with me forever to my world. As soon as she said this, the expressions on that woman's face changed with a crooked smile and as soon as Vikram looked at her, that 25 year old woman who was looking very beautiful in a red saree till now, now looked like an ugly 400 year old old woman whose blood red eyes were completely sunken, hair was white and mouth had become big and spread. That scene was so horrifying that Vikram felt as if he had a heart attack, he fainted instantly. Vikram, son Vikram! A voice came in Vikram's ears, he opened his eyes and found his grandmother near him. It was 8 o'clock in the morning and grandmother had come to wake him up from the bed. Vikram got up from the bed with a dry face and without saying anything he went towards the bathroom. From behind, his grandmother called him to come out after taking a bath, some rituals had to be performed. Today was the thirteenth day, there were a few rituals left which they had to complete. While taking a bath, Vikram was lost in thoughts whether the incident that happened with him last night was true or was he seeing all this in a dream?

After the bath, the family members performed all the remaining rituals and then the rest of the relatives went to their respective homes.

    The same evening:

Vikram went to the pond near the nearby temple to immerse the puja material.

You are Bansidhar's son, right? - Vikram heard a voice. Looking back, he saw that the person calling was the old priest of the same temple. He must have been around 80-85 years old, but was in perfect health. The priest asked Vikram to come with him and Vikram went with him. The whole village knew that priest. He had been taking care of this temple for almost 3 generations. Sitting on the platform of the temple, the priest said to Vikram - 'I saw you burying something under the Ashoka tree yesterday at night.' Does a person come here quietly at such a late hour? Why did you come here? Looking at your face, it seems that you are in some big trouble? Tell me what is bothering you?

Vikram, with a tearful face, tells the details of the entire incident to Pandit ji in one breath.

Hearing his pain, Panditji became serious and said: Son Vikram, you did not do well. You should not have messed with the laws of nature. You have called some other soul instead of your mother. Which red book is this in your hand? - said Panditji pointing towards a book in Vikram's bag. Vikram took out that book and carefully placed it in Panditji's hands. Panditji got frightened as he turned the pages of the book! Panditji (surprised): Have you done the ritual from this chapter written in this book? Vikram got frightened on hearing Panditji's changed voice and immediately said, yes, yes I have completed the ritual from this chapter written in this book. Panditji (putting hand on head): It is very bad. Do you even know what disaster you have invited? Panditji said to Vikram, the chapter from which you have read this mantra is very wrong. Vikram (silent): ..... ##!!!

Panditji (pointing towards the mantra in the book): You have called a Yakshini and that too not any ordinary Yakshini but a Karna Pishachini!! Out of the total 36 forms, this is the second most dangerous Pishachini. If you do not handle it properly, it takes away your life.

Hearing this, Vikram suddenly panicked and started crying and said, now I will not survive Panditji - now I will not survive...! Saying this, he gave the entire details of the incident of the night to Panditji.

Panditji: Don't panic, she controls your fear only. Don't be afraid. Your grandfather had also performed this ritual once and he died suddenly, much before time. He had also performed the same ritual, I had explained to him but he did not listen. I had asked to burn this book then itself. How is this book still in your house?

Vikram (sobbing): I don't know Panditji.

Panditji: Now burning it is of no use, first we have to find a solution for this Karna Pishachini. Later we will burn this book as per the rituals.

Listen- now she will also know about our conversation, you wear this Tulsi garland around your neck and you will be safe for at least next 15 days because this Pishachini will not be able to harm you for 15 days and neither will she be able to know anything about you. In these 15 days we will try to find a solution to get rid of her. You go home for now and meet me here tomorrow at 5 am. Saying this Panditji went inside the temple. That night:

While sleeping, Vikram had a dream in which a man (who was probably Vikram's grandfather) was trying to tell him something, then a shadow came from behind and picked him up and took him somewhere in the dark, a shadow which had long hair but the face was not visible and then shhh....!## Vikram woke up with the sound of something falling, he saw that his grandfather's photo which was kept on a table in Vikram's room along with a garland, was lying on the floor and the cat went and sat on it but as soon as Vikram got up from his bed, it ran away. Vikram closed the window and tried to sleep.

There was no activity for the next 3 days but on the fourth day, Saturday:

Vikram felt nauseous, he vomited 3 times. His clothes also got dirty, at midnight Vikram took a bath and then came back to his bed after drinking water. At around 2:30 in the night, Vikram smelled a strange odor and woke up. As soon as he opened his eyes, he found the same Karna Pishachini in front of him. He ran his hand over his neck but did not find the Tulsi Mala around his neck. After taking a bath, Vikram had forgotten to put the Tulsi Mala around his neck. Now Vikram was stunned. Now the Karna Pishachini repeats the same question again and asks for an answer. Vikram said fearfully: You go away, leave me forever. Karna Pishachini: This is not possible. Once I come, I do not go back without taking anything. Tell me your wish and then whatever I ask for in return, you will have to give it to me! Vikram: I wanted to talk to my deceased mother, can you do this? Karna Pishachini: Yes, I can do it. Next Tuesday at 3:15 pm, light two ghee lamps in your room, sit in white clothes, make a circle on the floor with vermilion and call out her name to the ghee lamp. She will come and talk to you. But remember that no one should know about this, otherwise the result will not be favorable to you. Saying this, she disappeared in the air leaving a thin trail like smoke.

No incident happened till next Tuesday, everything was peaceful.....

On Tuesday at 2:00 in the night, Vikram started preparing for the invocation of the spirit.

The lamps were placed inside the red circle, the rest of the room was dark. The window curtains were also completely drawn. Vikram, wrapped in red clothes, was just staring at the light of the two lamps and remembering his mother. It was 2:15, then 2:30, then 2:45 but nothing happened, no one came, no sound was heard. By now it was 3:30, Vikram opened his eyes and found nothing in front of him. Light rain had also started now amidst the cold wind outside. The sound of rain was reaching Vikram's ears. The water flowing from the edge of the window started coming inside Vikram's room little by little. Maybe the window was not closed properly. Vikram felt that nothing was going to happen now, his tantra did not work. He got up, adjusting the red cloth wrapped around his body and moved towards the window. He opened the window again and closed it tightly. As he was about to turn back, in the light of the electric light, he saw a terrifying face in the window glass which looked like his mother but in just 3 seconds, behind that face, the face of the same Karna Pishachini started appearing in the same old form which Vikram had seen last time.

This clearly meant that his mother's soul had not yet gone to the other world and for some reason, she was in the clutches of Karna Pishachini.

Suddenly, Vikram felt as if someone had lifted him from behind and thrown him on the ground and with blood flowing from his head, he went into a deep sleep. When his body became stable while flying through innumerable black circles, in this state of sleep he saw that Yakshini came in a very beautiful form and told him that his grandmother had kept this book with her, after your grandfather died she wanted to call him back and she also used this book at some time. When your grandmother did this sadhna, she had made a deal of your mother's soul and according to the agreement, after you turned 18, I took it. Ha ha ha, there was a loud laughter and Yakshini's form again became terrifying. We are people of the vampire caste, weak people should not do our sadhna, your grandmother was also weak and due to her selfishness your mother's life was taken away. Today is Amavasya and I have a strong craving for blood.

Vikram was not able to say anything. But he was feeling that someone had made a cut near his thigh and gradually his body was becoming weak. Now he was not able to see anything and there was complete silence all around. It was 5 o'clock by then, the first rays of the sun had fallen on the ground.

    Memorial Hospital 9 am:

Two nurses were seen making some arrangements for the medicines. Vikram's father was looking at Vikram on a chair nearby.

The medicines had shown their effect, Vikram opens his eyes after a while.

Vikram: Papa how am I in the hospital?

Papa: You were lying unconscious in your room. You were called but you did not open the door for hours, so we all broke the door and took you out. After saying this, father wiped his tears and pointed with his hand towards the 3 other people who had come with him, who were his neighbors. The doctor said that he will release us in 4-5 hours and then we can go home. But how did all this happen??

Vikram: I don't know Papa, it happened suddenly (Vikram hid the matter). Changing the question, he said- 'Hasn't grandmother come? '

Papa: No, in this atmosphere of the house it was necessary for a person to stay at home and you know that he has difficulty in walking. We had forbidden him to come here.

    Vikram: Okay Papa.

Vikram was discharged from the hospital at around 2:00 in the afternoon. The car was ready to go home. As we reached our street, we heard some noise outside. When we looked out of the car, we saw someone's funeral procession. On asking, we came to know that the 85-year-old Panditji living nearby had died last night. He had died vomiting blood and his eyes were hanging outwards. I don't know how this happened to him suddenly, saying this a man moved forward again. The light rain of the night had still not stopped, the surrounding area was completely wet due to the intermittent rain.

Water was seen dripping from the thatched houses. The cold winds blowing from above were making the body shiver. But Vikram was feeling regret along with fear. He knew that Panditji's death was also due to the same Karna Pishaachini for which he himself was responsible.

By then the car had reached the doorstep of Vikram's house. As soon as Vikram, filled with remorse, put his feet on the ground, he felt intense heat. This fierce heat woke him up. This meant that he had not woken up since he fainted at night. Vikram, who had become weak, quickly composed himself and looked around. The house had caught fire, he ran in the direction of the flames. The flames were coming from the puja room. Vikram started shouting and searching for his grandmother and father amidst those flames. A burning flame fell near Vikram's feet. Vikram pulled his legs back and separated himself from her, but as soon as he again saw the source of the fire lying down, he was shocked. It was his grandmother who was burning and now her body had stopped moving. By then the people of the neighbourhood had also arrived, somehow everyone took Vikram and his father out of there who was about 60% burnt. The fire brigade had been called which could come here any time. They were being taken to the hospital in a fast-moving four wheeler, Vikram was also sitting with them, when suddenly a woman came in the way of their car, while trying to save her, the balance of the car got disturbed and the car overturned and a big cargo truck coming from behind crushed their car and went ahead. A crowd of people had gathered. Stories had started being made and with this the witch had done her work.

An old saying has been said very correctly: "Nothing is achieved neither by worrying nor by planning, only that happens which is in the fate of a person". Having written this much, Kumar Satish closed the cap of his pen and placed it on his pen holder made of Sangwan wood and went to get ready to join the gathering of writers for the release of his new book.

This story raises many questions, such as: Who was that cat that kept coming to the house repeatedly? Did a woman really come in front of Vikram's car, or was it just an illusion? What did his grandfather want to tell him in the dream? What happened to that book? Is it waiting for someone else? Who knows who is next?

    THE END!
