In the last 2 days, I've read so much about "WHY" Mukesh Ambani got Reliance into mango production. And I'm absolutely impressed and inspired! AA

It is the largest producer and exporter of mangoes in the world. But, most people don't know much about it.

But, to explain it all, I would have to take you 10k days back, to 1997!

Around 1997, Reliance was already making varied textiles, yarns, chemicals and more in Gujarat's Jamnagar.

And the Pollution Control Board had observed a consistent and considerable rise in air and water pollution levels in the region

Plus, Reliance was also about to commission its integrated refinery & petrochem complex in 1999. Thus, the pollution problems were going to worsen.

And that's where came a genius idea!

So, the thing is, Govt had begun pushing big companies to spend a part of net profits into corporate social responsibility (CSR).

-> And like most corporates, Reliance too wanted to deploy that CSR money into avenues which would aid the business interests, than donations

-> Therefore, it decided to use a sizeable chunk of CSR money to buy 600 acres of BARREN land in Jamnagar to build a mango orchard

    Born: Dhirubhai Ambani Lakhibag Amrayee!

But, this posed more fears for the locals and the Govt

Jamnagar being arid and drought-prone, the massive orchard would put great strain on already strained local water bodies.

-> Thus, Reliance roped in IDE Technologies to build a seawater desalination plant in 1998

-> And it kept investing more of CSR money to expand desalination capacity, with projects completed in 2005, 2008 and 2015

Then in 2022, it awarded another big capacity expansion to now Rakesh Jhunjhunwala-backed VA Tech Wabag (which by the way has been a multibagger stock).

All of this has helped Reliance:

    1> Meet its CSR obligations

2> Create thousands of stable jobs for locals to operate the massive orchard and ancillary operations like packing, sorting, quality check, logistics etc

3> Improve the environment around its industrial complexes

4> Turn barren lands into lush green orchards!

This orchard today has ~1.3L trees growing ~200 varieties of mangoes

-> And the production is so large, that even though much of it is sold domestically, Reliance still manages to export enough to be called the world's No.1 mango exporter

-> Plus, the varieties include not just Indian ones like Kesar, Alphonso, Ratna, Sindhu, Neelam, and Amrapali, but also international ones like Florida's Tommy Atkins and Kent from Florida, and Israel's Lily, Keitt, and Maya

Amazing, isn't it! Did you know this?
