Jason pulls me off the couch in a very unromantic way. I wake up startled, brushing my disheveled hair out of my eyes.

    Where is my purse?

All I see are various articles of my outfit strewn about, including my expensive champagne gown, now scrunched up in a ball on the floor.

“Why do you always have to make a scene everywhere we go? That was my best friend’s fucking wedding.”

I rub my eyes as I mentally register Jason’s tone, and walk over to the kitchen counter where I take a seat. Unsure of what to say, I stare dumbfounded at the man I have loved for over a year. I have never seen this side of him.

“Jason, what do you not understand? There was some shady shit going on last night. I only asked you to leave because I saw something I shouldn’t have, and I got scared. My suspicions were further validated when that girl started telling me I was a liar!”

“All I know is, I found you arguing with her out in the cold, in some goddamn back alley, during one of the most important nights of Angelo’s life.”

Jason paces around the room, running his hands through his hair anxiously. At some point last night, he also must have changed his clothes. His tux had been replaced by a pair of Vuori joggers, and a brown Essentials hoodie.

    So very Jason of him.

I look down and see my own outfit, consisting of a similar pair of his joggers and one of his hoodies from college.

“She was telling me not to say anything about what I saw. She said she didn’t know the groom, and she didn’t have a bracelet. SHE is obviously the liar.”

I stare into my hands as I speak, disappointed in myself that I ruined Jason’s night over something that might not be real. Maybe I did have too many drinks before we left.

Jason continues to stay silent as he walks circles around the coffee table.

“And thank you for letting me stay here last night, I was really shaken up…I’m sorry J.” I swallow my pride and get up from my seat at the counter to make my way over to him. I slide my arms around his waist and rest my head on his back.

He stiffens for a minute before relaxing into my touch, rubbing my arms gently.

“Let’s not fight like this again. Last night was bad.”

He takes my face in his hands, and we stay like that for a while, remembering all of our love.

“Agreed,” I shake my head. “But don’t you want to know what was going on? Is he cheating?” I look up at him and search for any sign of a tell, any sign of empathy for the newly wedded wife now caught up in a scandal on day one.

Jason lets go and shakes his head.

“Don’t meddle in other people’s business, not to be mean but it’s quite frankly unattractive.” He grabs his coat roughly and starts off for the door, apparently having flipped an internal switch from the loving boyfriend I had had just a second ago.

I sit back down on the couch after he leaves, curling my knees up into my chest.

Is this worth ending things over? To find out what happened?

I contemplate what I should value more, loving someone or finding out the truth. I sink into my spot on the couch and pull up Facebook on my laptop. Clearly, this is not something I can let go.

Two hours later, I wake up from my accidental nap to the sound of the front door opening. I pretend to stay asleep, hoping to avoid any more drama until I have a minute to collect myself and wake up.

Jason walks in quietly, shutting the door behind him. He looks around and takes off his hood, while holding a small jewelry box, slightly hidden behind his back.

    It’s maroon.
