I was travelling in DTC bus today. As usual, it was evening office time. During rush hours, its not easy to get a seat. There was an aged lady wearing sunglasses standing infront of me.

I was standing with my friend and the aged lady in the yellow box in above picture.

There were two ladies sitting in the pink box ( seats for handicap) both near to age 20–22 .

There was an old man sitting with his wife in the blue box behind.

Now the old lady kept falling and the passengers started having a problem . Once she slipped on me. I asked her if she were ok and asked her what was wrong with her eyes. She told me, she was a poor lady, she had just got her eyes operated for cataract. She had not been able to see for years due to it. Now when she finally got it operated with her savings, no one in her family took care of even dropping her by some other transport.

I felt bad and I went forward and urged the two girls sitting on the handicap seat to please get up and give the poor lady some space and explained her condition. None paid heed to what I uttered.

I repeated myself thrice more. No one cared to even turn their faces, even though the whole bus had heard me by now. Sadly the old man sitting with his wife behind in the blue box space, got up to offer his seat to the poor old lady.

What shocked me today?

I dont know what was wrong with the girls. I dont know what was wrong with the poor old lady’s young sons. How could someone be so arrogant to not empathize or see someones suffering just for a moment of greed .

Even I was a 22 year old girl asking the girls sitting, to show some courtesy. Even my mother has suffered through a cataract operation in past and I was the one who took her responsibility as my father was out of town.

I had no words for what I saw. This is not the way I was brought up to be. This is not what I expect from India’s present or future generation.

As an Indian, I was deeply shocked by this incident.
