Ragging:Â
Ragging is an act of teasing or bullying with new students in educational institutions by senior or old students which cause mental or physical harm to the sufferer. We keep hearing the news about ragging everyday. Time has changed and educational institutions are upgrading them day by day. Government and educational institutions have constituted committees or agencies to deal with ragging cases. But still, there are many cases we hear about ragging.
In the past years ragging cases are in flow. There were 219 cases in 2020, 511 cases in 2021, 810 cases in 2022, 511 cases in 2023 of ragging registered across the country. Ragging cases ratio is fluctuating over the year but ragging hasn’t stopped yet.
Ragging impacts on mental as well as physical health of students who suffer. Some students don’t take any action against the wrong happening with them in their educational institution and they choose to stay calm and tolerate the wrong i.e. ragging which results that they have to suffer more day by day & it results in suicide or trauma which disturb their studies & personal life as well.
Around 40% students face ragging but only 8.2% students go to take action as per UGC (University Grants Commission) report.
Dealing with ragging cases: Students who suffer from ragging should complain against the ragging in their institute, if the institute is irresponsive then they may go through agencies or committees constituted by the Government to deal with ragging cases. University Grants Commission has constituted Anti-ragging cells and issued helpline number and email id as well to receive ragging cases which is very helpful for students who suffer.
Law for ragging: Any student who suffers from ragging may lodge a complaint in the police station or helpline number of committee or agency constituted by UGC.Â
Punishment for ragging: whoever is convicted for ragging may be punished with imprisonment for the term of two years or fine which may extend to ten thousand or both.
Stop ragging to save life as we are losing many lives of students every year because of it.
