I was teaching my students concept of back bonding in chemistry class.Back bonding is a chemistry phenomenon in which electrons pass from one atom’s atomic orbital to an acceptor (ligand). The metal’s electrons are used to bind to the ligand, reliving the metal of excess negative charge in the process .I summarized my lesson in form of poem.The same I am listing below for my esteem readers.
I am Carbon #monoxide(CO)-a daughter
Transition#Metal(TM) is my mother
She is special as she has d electrons in her outer most orbit.
I, CO wish to be together with my #mother (TM)
In order to do so I form sigma bond by overlap
Of my non-bonding (or weakly anti-bonding)
sp-hybridized #electron pair on my carbon
With a blend of d-, s-, and #p-orbitals on the TM -My mother
After formation of #sigma bond,
There is overlap of filled d-orbitals on the TM (mother)
With a pair of #pi– antibonding orbitals
Projecting from the carbon atom of me (CO),
This bonding is from #TM to CO
Rather than usual from CO to TM
It involves pi orbitals.
Thus phenomenon is called #pi back bonding(BB)
The compound formed with BB of d electrons, has pi bonding character,
Through BB, TM-carbon (part of me) bond is strengthened.
When I was young
MY mother used to play #BB game with me,
We(TM-daughter(CO) used to sit,
With our spine touching each other spine,
It was like transferring information from,
One computer station to another,
An end to information transfer process never came,
Now I at once realized,
It was nothing but BB of(mother) TM to (daughter) CO,
My mother (TM) is very important person in my (CO) life,
Who acts as my #strong back bone through BB,
She helps me (daughter) in every stage in my life transitions,
Puberty-to adulthood-mother hood.
Thanks to BB of TM(mother) with me(CO),
For giving a good support in forming stronger,
Bond between mother daughter duo,
And making TM and CO as comfortable cushion to each other,
Which has lasting effects on coming generations,
And builds legacy for #mother daughter duo.
