Can this all-new MPV with its unique approach replicate the Innova’s success?

The reliability of Toyota Innova never needs a introduction. From it’s first launch in 2005 to present, it has always ruled its segment, stands to the mark of a perfect car. 

Now, with its all new successor, the Innova Hycross, Toyota endeavors to keep Innova’s strong brand equity and steps up its game to an another level. One of the biggest change we’ll be seeing is that it will be powered by a Hybrid Engine and is now born on a completely new TNGA-C “High” platform. Its ex-showroom prices will be between Rs 18.30Lakhs – 19.20Lakhs for the normal petrol engine and between Rs 24.01 Lakhs – Rs 28.97Lakhs for its new hybrid engine. The petrol version of the Innova Crysta will be permanently discontinued and the diesel version will be sold alongside. But the question is can the Hycross replicate the Crysta’s success ? 

Exterior and Styling

To talk about the exteriors the Toyota designers have done a marvellous job in not just modernizing the Hycross but also lifting up its character without losing its essence. Its 4755mm long, 1850mm wide and 1795mm tall. Almost achieving the size of the Fortuner. Now because of its bigger dimensions it has a dynamic and eye catching road presence.  The wheel size varies with lower and higher versions. The lower will be equipped with 17 Inch Alloys and the top ends would have a 18 Inch base. The bigger the tyres the better stability and handling. But it does come at the cost of efficiency. The window line in the Hycross distinctly flows down towards the tail, unlike the Crysta’s sprucely upward kink. Its leaning rear windscreen, with its board- sided design, horizontal tail- lights and other elements link it to some crossovers in Toyota’s multinational portfolio.

Interiors Details and Spacing

Being a monocoque, what you ’ll directly notice is a more agreeable cabin height due to a lower bottom than the Crysta. Its insides are a far cry from the rather stark cabin of the Crysta, not only in terms of design, but indeed in terms of the colors, quality and layout.

The horizontally acquainted touchscreen as well as the air vents accentuate the range of the dashboard, and some padded bits with varying double stitching give it a premium flavor.

Engine and Performance

Toyota is offering the Innova Hycross with a choice of two powertrains – a2.0- litre naturally aspirated petrol and a2.0- litre hybrid, the bottommost being the focus now. What’s intriguing is that, while the petrol and hybrid partake the same 1987 cc, four- cylinder direct– injection engine, the latter runs a more effective Atkinson cycle wherein the input valves remain open for a longer during the compaction stroke for a spare air– fuel mixture. Hence, the petrol unit makes simply 188Nm of torque by itself, compared to the standard(non-hybrid) petrol’s 205Nm.
