PUBG bosses are suing the makers of Fortnite, claiming the shooter game is so similar it breaks copyright rules. Chiefs at the Battle Royale free-to-play hit reckon the new contender, which has stolen the spotlight in recent months, effectively nicked its idea to cash-in on the genre craze. And with Epic Games making record sums for Fortnite in recent weeks, including huge amounts of cash from add-one sales to the free main game, PUBG isn’t happy. The game filed a copyright violation lawsuit in January against Epic to litigate whether Fortnite is infringing on PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds’ design. The suit has been filed with the Seoul Central District Court against Epic Games Korea, but the result of the will have global ramifications with the two shooter franchise hits. Bluehole, PUBG Corp’s parent company, said the main issue is with the fact that Epic Games provides the engine for PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds and therefore profits from both games’ success.
Most similar thing between these two games are : 1. Similar 100 player pvp, last one standing or last squad standing wins. 2. Same way of dropping to the map with a flying carrier allowing players to land accordingly. 3. Similar way of healing with bandages and medkits. 4. Similar way of revieveing and knocking out other players. 5. Last of all, PUBG reported to copy similar weapons from it.
SHOULD THIS BE A CASE? :
Most of the people play Fortnite Battle Royale, and will take its side but many complaints about copying. PUBG said to copy similar waepons which is not suitable as these and from real life and PUBG too copied the real Battle Royale and H1Z1 game and they both didn’t sue it as it was way better and more popular. This case is similar to that between PUBG and Fortnite
When Fortnite was first launched, the game only had the Save the World mode, at which gamers build walls and defended it. But in September, the firm added the free-to-play “Battle Royale” portion into the game, provoking a plagiarism controversy and allegations that it copied “Battlegrounds” items and user interface (UI). A spokesman said: “We just want to emphasise this is only a problem because Epic Games is the company that makes the engine we use and we pay a large amount of royalties to them. “And we had this business relationship and we had trust that we would be getting continued support, and we were looking forward to working more closely with them to get technical support, maybe develop new features. “But our name was used to officially promote their game without our knowledge. There was no discussion. “It was just a bit surprising and disappointing to see our business partner using our name officially to promote the game mode that is pretty similar to us and there was misunderstanding in the community that we’re officially involved in the project.”
The game is based on previous mods that were created by Brendan “PlayerUnknown” Greene for other games using the film Battle Royale for inspiration, and expanded into a standalone game under Greene’s creative direction. In the game, up to one hundred players parachute onto an island and scavenge for weapons and equipment to kill others while avoiding getting killed themselves. The available safe area of the game’s map decreases in size over time, directing surviving players into tighter areas to force encounters. The last player or team standing wins the round. This was the first post popular Battle Royale game followed by Fortnite. 2017 was the year of battle royale. After lurking around the fringes of gaming in the modding community for years, battle royale burst into the mainstream in 2016 with Daybreak’s H1Z1 (formerly King of the Kill, which Greene consulted on) and then was taken to staggering new heights with PUBG, which left Early Access in December. Fortnite’s free battle royale mode burst onto the scene in late 2017 and has attracted millions of players as well.
Personally our gaming team feels that PUBG shouldn’t has posted a lawsuit as per the popularity of the game. PUBG should introduce something special for the players to get attracted rather than try shutting down others. Like Fortnite introduces something hot every week and are the fastest to remove bugs.
